Shape/Size
Evergreen shrub or small tree with crooked branches and smooth red bark that readily peels off. Young twigs appear waxy green. Leaves Stiff, leathery, flat, oblong with a tip, 3/4 to 2 inches long. Flower/Fruit White or pinkish urn shaped flowers blooming December to March. The fruit is a sticky berry resembling a tiny apple, maturing in late spring to summer. Range Common on north slopes below 4,500 feet. Prevalent in the Santa Monica Mountains. Flammability - Moderate. Maintenance Does not resprout after fire. Highly desirable for cultural, ornamental, and wildlife value. Recommend removal of dead wood and lifting of canopy off the ground. Remove dead material within the shrub. |
