Shape/Size
Evergreen shrub 3 to 12 feet tall with grayish brown or reddish bark. Young branchlets have fine stiff hairs. Leaves Leathery, with smooth margins sometimes rolled under at edges. Dull green and smooth above, grayish white fine hairs below. 1/4 to 3/4 inch long. Flower/Fruit Flowers are white, growing in clusters blooming January to April. Fruit is a large capsule with small horns. Range , Grows near the coast below 2,000 feet in coastal sage scrub and chaparral plant communities. Flammability - Moderate. Maintenance Has significant wildlife value. Recommend keeping plants in all but dense stands as a native ornamental for wildlife and erosion control. Remove dead material, lift off the ground, and light pruning to enhance open structure. Remove competing vegetation to maintain open spacing. |
